Norfolk, Neb. - One highly trafficked bridge in Northeast Nebraska is becoming more accessible to pedestrians.

The Norfolk City Council approved plans from JEO Consulting Group to improve the Norfolk Avenue Bridge, which connects highway 35 to Norfolk Ave.

Construction on the $342,000 bridge improvement project will temporarily shut down traffic from four lanes to two. Once completed, it will increase the width of the bridge and create a new sidewalk.

The bridge currently has a single pedestrian sidewalk on the south side. Under the plan, a second sidewalk will be added on the north side.

The project still has a list of checkpoints to make it through. Construction could start by next year or 2028 depending on permit approval.
