NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - The McCook Police Department responded to reports of a loose cow on West B Street near 10th Street on Wednesday, initiating a precautionary security lockdown at local schools.

Officers arrived to find the animal had moved to the McCook High School tennis courts. In response, both the junior high and high school were placed on a “secure” status, confining students and staff indoors while keeping the cow outside.

Police herded the cow west toward the Red Willow County fairgrounds, where the owner regained control with assistance from McCook Community College Rodeo Team members and fairgrounds staff. The animal was eventually transported to a sale barn.

No injuries were reported during the incident. The McCook Police Department thanked community members and responders for their cooperation and assistance.
