NORFOLK, Neb. -- A 36-year-old man is in custody after allegedly wrapping a dog leash around another man's neck during a Sunday night altercation in northeast Nebraska.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m., Norfolk Police officers were called to the area of 3rd Street and Norfolk Avenue for an assault that had occurred between two males.

When officers arrived, they had contact with a 44-year-old man.

Other officers located a second man who had been involved, and had identified him as 36-year-old Jeremy Heiderman.

The alleged victim stated that he had been walking his dog and decided to sit on a bench on Norfolk Avenue. He said that Heiderman was across the street on another bench and began yelling at him.

The 44-year-old told police that he did not know Heiderman and tried to ignore him. A short time later Heiderman reportedly crossed street and confronted the victim.

According to the man, Heiderman began arguing with him and then shoved him, causing him to fall. Heiderman then allegedly took the man's dog leash and wrapped it around his neck, while stating that he was going to kill him.

A witness had arrived in the area and described seeing what occurred and hearing what was said.

Once the police were contacted by phone, Heiderman left the area, reportedly leaving the leash around the victim’s neck.

After speaking to the alleged victim, the witness, and Heiderman, NPD arrested Heiderman for attempted second-degree murder. He was housed in the Norfolk City Jail and later transferred to the Madison County Jail.
