What's that smell? Why residents in Norfolk have noticed an odd odor recently
NORFOLK, Neb. -- If you live or have traveled around the city of Norfolk recently, you may have noticed a peculiar smell in the air.
By most accounts, it's not a pleasant one and residents have been asking what's causing it.
According to the city of Norfolk, the smell is because of two factors: months of heavy industrial loading and January's cold temperatures.
In a press release, the city says the source of the smell is due to issues with its water pollution control plant.
Due to the aforementioned factors, the biological treatment process and peroxide system at the plant have been negatively impacted.
This has resulted in the odor treatment process of the plant being less effective.
Still, there is good news for Norfolk's noses.
The city says the peroxide system is now up and running again, meaning the smells should be alleviated as the biological systems recover.
Still, the city warns some lingering odors may stick around for the next few weeks as they continue to work to mitigate loading issues and address smell concerns.
