NORFOLK -- Memorial Day is often associated with barbecues, vacation days, and traveling. But at the end of the day, it's meant as a moment to appreciate veterans. At the Norfolk VFW, veterans ask people to remember this as Monday approaches.

"Memorial day is a day of remembrance, it's not a holiday... it's not a happy time, we remember those who didn't make it," said Joe Kramer, a vet at the Norfolk VFW.

Across Nebraska and the country, flags flew at half-staff from sunrise until noon to honor those who died in service of the United States.

From 1868 until 1970, Memorial Day was recognized on May 30th. Since then, it has been observed on the final Monday in May.
