WAYNE, Neb.-- Making history.

“It’s just fantastic having a great defense behind me. I just felt really confident throwing every pitch,” said Brooks Kneifl, who is a player on the Wayne High School baseball team.

Back on April 4th, Brooks Kneifl became the first pitcher in the history of Wayne High School to throw a perfect game.

The junior and Kansas State recruit tossed 13 strikeouts over seven innings of work.

Kneifl is giving all the credit to his teammates.

“Having Kaleb Moormeier behind the dish just felt awesome because he’s been working his tail off this offseason,” Kneifl said. “I just felt confident and my defense would make plays for me,” added Kneifl.

The head coach for the Blue Devils, Adam Hoffman, said being able to coach a player like Kneifl has been an honor.

“He’s a kid that really works hard in the offseason. Everything he has coming his way, he earns,” added Hoffman. “You don’t always see kids going onto the next level, like division one around here. It’s pretty cool to witness things he’s doing on the mound,” said Hoffman.

Hoffman mentioned Kneifl has stepped up being a leader with the program this year and it’s not just on the baseball diamond.

“He’s really taken on that role as far as a team captain,” Hoffman said. “Guys kind of look up to him as far as leading by example,” he added.

“He’s got eyes on him. Younger guys, not even just on our team, but in the community,” Hoffman said.

With Kneifl leading the Blue Devils, the team is currently on a four-game winning streak.

Both mentioned things they need to do to keep their winning streak alive.

“Just challenging the guys every day at practice and knowing that they have to come and get a little bit better,” Hoffman added.

“I always use the phrase Tom Osborne always said, “You’re either going to get better or you’re going to get worse. You never stay the same,” said Hoffman.

“We just gotta buy-in on coaches philosophy,” said Kneifl. “Our defense has been fantastic this season and we just got to put the ball in play,” Kneifl added.

The Blue Devils' next matchup is Thursday at St. Paul/Palmer.
