Yard sale supports Norfolk woman's dying father
NORFOLK -- One family is raising money in Norfolk before a father dies.
On Saturday, May 28, from noon until 4 p.m., Kim Throener hosted a yard sale at 205 Beverly Road in Norfolk. The proceeds help her father, who has terminal cancer.
"We did have an estranged relationship for a while but he got sober and he's been amazing," Throener said.
In December, her father and stepmother were driving home in Texas. That's when Throener's father suddenly ran into a firework stand. At the ER, hospital staff discovered a massive tumor in his lungs. After chemotherapy and radiation, cancer moved into his brain. It is now terminal, and her family does not have life insurance.
"He would help anyone with anything. I remember growing up, if he saw people on the side of the street he would always pick them up and let them work for his construction company -- a lot of times, paying them with a place to stay," Throener said.
Throener owns a daycare in Norfolk. Her clients, she said, have helpfully donated supplies and helped her focus on family time.
"I was worried I was not going to see him again, around Easter," Throener said.
Now, Throener believes her father will have about two months to plan before the family will be taking on unpaid bills and more hospital and funeral expenses.
The yard sale includes books, kitchen and bathroom supplies, clothes, toys, decor and more.
Throener's son, who teaches music lessons at Midwest Music, is also selling his guitar.
"That made me want to cry because I know he treasures his music," Throener said.
Throener said you can donate through Facebook, too.
