Semi-trailer tips causing hog spill in early morning hours
NORFOLK, Neb. -- Norfolk Police Division responded to a semi-trailer tip early Thursday morning.
NPD officers responded to a semi accident in the 37th St. and Norfolk Ave. roundabout around 5:30 a.m.
NPD Captain Chad Reiman said the semi was heading eastbound on Hwy 275 with 130 hogs in the trailer.
Reiman said the semi tipped soon after entering the roundabout. He said a rough estimate of at least 10 hogs will be dead due to the accident.
While hogs were injured, the driver made out without any injuries.
Reiman said the driver, a Springfield man, was cited for negligent driving, and speed was believed to be a factor in the accident.
The incident started around 5:30 a.m. and was still being cleaned up around 10:00 a.m.
The outer lane of the roundabout has been closed since the incident happened and will remain closed until the hogs are transferred and the semi is righted.
Reiman said around 10:00 a.m. officers were still working to get hogs into another trailer, and once that is complete they will right the semi.
He said the truck has significant damage to it while the trailer is significantly damaged and possibly totaled. There is unknown damage to the roadway at this time.
