NORFOLK, Neb. -- A church in northeast Nebraska celebrated Veterans Day in a special way.

Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk held a Veterans Day program on Friday to honor local Veterans.

Christy Owen, one of the organizers of the event, said the program is becoming an annual event for the church.

"We have put this event on for quite a few years," Owen said. "This is an important event in our community for the fact that we can share all the goodness and thank all of our Veterans that have served and are still serving today."

Students ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade read Veterans Day essays during the event.

The Christ Lutheran Band performed different patriotic songs to honor the different branches of the military.

At the end of the event, organizers presented Quilts of Valor to different local Veterans.

Owen told News Channel Nebraska why she thinks Veterans Day is such an important day to honor.

"Veterans Day is just an honor," she said. "All these people would give their life for their country and help everyone in America."

Christ Lutheran Schools celebrated 150 years in Norfolk in 2021 and are working on a major construction project this year.
