McCarthy wins recount, defeats challenger Steiner retaining Ward 4 Council seat
MADISON, Neb. -- After all two hours of counting ballots, the results are in.
Incumbent Andrew McCarthy defeated challenger Zach Steiner to retain his spot on the Norfolk Ward 4 Council.
Before Monday's recount, McCarthy led the vote total 696 to 690.
After the recount, McCarthy was declared the winner with votes totaling 695 for McCarthy and 690 for Steiner.
Anne Pruss, the Madison County Clerk, told News Channel Nebraska why she believed the recount was important for the race.
“It's important for the candidates, I believe," Pruss said. "They want a clear number as to who won the race. Everyone puts in some much time for these elections, whether it be going to talk to individuals, putting fliers up, making posters, getting those votes."
She added that the recount was mandatory due to the vote difference falling under a state statute.
In the last eight years, three elections in Madison County have required a recount.
McCarthy was appointed to the council seat in 2021 by Norfolk Mayor Josh Moenning.
