NORFOLK, Neb. -- Another high school student in the Norfolk area is asking for the public's help to raise funds to compete in a national competition in Florida.

A story that News Channel Nebraska did last week featured a female wrestler from Norfolk High School, Tiearra Thompson, who is also raising funds to compete in the Disney Duals in Orlando. Her cousin, Jaeden Thompson, is right beside her to hopefully make the trip as well to the East Coast.

With only being a sophomore at Norfolk High School, Thompson has already accomplished a lot that includes two-time Huskerland State Champion, one-time Nebraska USA State Champion for the high school division, one-time Midwest Classic National Champion and the list goes on.

Even with all of his success, Thompson told us that he actually thought about quitting wrestling altogether.

“Last year at state when I got beat and went one and two, I felt like it really wasn’t for me,” Thompson said.

With being close to quitting the sport he loves, he said his parents were his main source of reassurance to keep going.

“They were like you’ve had too much experience on this sport to just give up on it.”

Now, Thompson is confident and better than ever before.

Last weekend in Grand Island, Thompson was squaring off with an opponent that had previously defeated him six times in a row. Well, it’s safe to say that the streak didn’t continue, and he finally came away on the winning side.

Thompson’s progress with his GoFundMe already has raised $1,200 with a goal of $2,000.

He added when he’s competing in Florida, he wants to show the country what Nebraska wrestling is all about.

“I’m hoping to have a winning percentage higher than 70%,” he said.

Thompson also has two brothers and a sister who all wrestle. His parents said he’s a huge role model for not only them, but his younger cousin’s as well.
