Yutan, Scotus claim NSAA journalism championships

Yutan and Scotus claimed state titles on the opening day of the Nebraska School Activities Association’s state journalism championships.

NORFOLK, Neb. – Yutan and Scotus claimed state titles on the opening day of the Nebraska School Activities Association’s state journalism championships.

Yutan had finalists in 21 of 25 events en route to a Class C title, while Scotus cruised to a Class B crown on the strength of five individual event championships.

Alexis Pehrson won two individual crowns, including Sports News Writing and Photo/Artistic Illustration to help lead Yutan past runner-up Southern Valley.

Yutan claimed six individual event winners, including the top three positions in Newspaper Sports Feature Writing.

It is the fifth straight state title, and ninth overall, for Yutan.

Scotus had finalists in 16 categories, including nine events with multiple medal-winners, helping push the Shamrocks to a comfortable 438-282 victory over runner-up Elkhorn North, which had four individual event winners of its own, including two by Caleb Polking.

It is the fifth title in the past seven years for Scotus.

The Class A champions will be crowned Tuesday. The awards ceremony will be carried live on News Channel Nebraska.
