Second week of flushing water mains in Norfolk
The Norfolk Water Division will be starting their second week of water main flushing.
NORFOLK, Neb. -- The Norfolk Water Division will be starting their second week of water main flushing.
Officials said they started their annual water main flushing program on Apr. 24. The next section of flushing will continue and be done during the evening and overnight hours started at 8:30 p.m. and concluding at 6:30 a.m. the following day.
The flushing will start Sunday evening and end Thursday morning.
The Water Division said that no flushing will be performed on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday evenings.
City officials said that June 2 is the estimated end date for the flushing program.
The Norfolk Water Division asks the public to refrain from parking near fire hydrants in the affected areas.
During May 1 through May 4 all areas from 37th St. east to 18th St., from Prospect Ave. to Omaha Ave. will be flushed.
The following locations will be affected by the next week of flushing:
- Our Savior Lutheran
- Fountain Point Medical
- Menards
- Norfolk Catholic High School
- Authier Miller Pape Eye care
- Walmart
- Homestead Assisted Living
- Faith Regional West Campus
- Vulcraft / Nucor Cold Finish
- All Commercial locations along Norfolk Avenue west of 25th Street
The city says the reason for the flushing program is to remove the buildup of iron and manganese deposits that have collected in the water mains.
The Water Division says that the water is bacteria free, but it's not recommended to consume the water if it is extremely discolored.
Customers that live in the areas that are affected by the flushing program are encouraged not to do any laundry tasks during the flushing.
They also recommend isolating ice machines to prevent any iron and manganese deposits from plugging the ice machines.
