CROFTON, Neb. -- After Council Member James Murphy received enough signatures for a recall election, fellow Council Member Larry Peitz faces a recall election at the end of the year.

According to Knox County Clerk Joanne Fischer, Crofton citizens will make a decision on two council members in 2023.

The petition for Peitz needed 63 valid signatures and received 71 with 64 being valid signatures.

Former Police Chief John Carter put forward petitions for Peitz and Mayor Bob Evans.

The petition for Evans did not get returned to the county clerk’s office and failed to get enough signatures to trigger the recall election. The petition needed 127 valid signatures for Evans’ recall.

Peitz’s recall election is not officially set, but Fischer expects sometime in November for the official recall date.

Peitz did not submit a defense statement according to Fischer.

Murphy’s recall election ballots were sent out on Monday and voters have until 5 p.m. on Sept. 2 to send the ballots back to the county clerk.

The ballot includes a sales and use tax issue.
