NORFOLK, Neb. -- A northeast Nebraska transit agency has released its ridership numbers since reopening in April.

In a press release, North Fork Area Transit (NFAT) showcased its ridership spanning from April to July. The transit agency said in those four months they provided 11,872 one-way trips.

Its lowest month was April with about 2,002 trips. May saw a significant increase to 3,264 trips, before reaching its current peak in June with 3,387 rides.

July saw a slight drop off in ridership with 3,219 trips. NFAT said these numbers show that the agency has quickly resumed services since its reopening.

They also said the data "confirms" the need for public transportation in Norfolk.

“The need for public transit in our community is real and this data confirms it," said Lacy Kimes, NFAT transit board president. "We are so thankful to our community for seeing that need and supporting our return to operations.”

NFAT originally closed in January of 2023 due to lack of funds.

Its Former General Manager Jeffery Stewart was accused of embezzling money for flights, casino trips, vacations, and other personal purchases. Stewart was wanted for seven months, before surrendering himself to authorities at the Texas-Mexico border in July.
