NORFOLK, Neb. — After a round of thunderstorms and downpours ran through the Norfolk area Saturday morning, officials with Oktoberfest said plans have shifted but the event will continue.

The Norfolk area received around an inch of rain on Saturday, and Oktoberfest volunteers were tasked with getting the streets cleaned up.

Event organizer Kelle Tichota has helped the event for seven years and said that this year’s event has been the most hectic with the weather.

“We’re still kind of setting a few things up, but the weather is going to be awesome and it’s going to go as planned,” Tichota said.

Due to rain before and during Oktoberfest, Tichota said the setup for Friday and the restart of Saturday have contributed to the difficulty of setting up.

The National Weather Service’s forecast for Saturday afternoon has a 70% chance of rain with the highest chance of thunderstorms before 2:00 p.m.

With the heavy rain this morning, Tichota said some of the tents were damaged or blown over from the high winds.

“We lost some tents so we’re borrowing and getting from some of our ambassadors [and] some of the people who work here,” Tichota said.

Tichota said the volunteers helping out in the morning and trying to set up the area, and making the afternoon enjoyable have made dealing with the weather easier.

“We can’t do this without all of the volunteers, and I have an amazing group of ambassadors," Tichota said.

The gates opened at noon and Tichota said the event will go on regardless of the weather.

“I booked the band a year out,” Tichota said. “The tents were booked last year. I can’t have a rain date.”
