Multiple TASER weapons used to take down suspect in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Neb. - A man who police say was armed with an aerosol can and a .22 revolver is in custody after officers used a TASER to subdue him.

Norfolk Police say they responded to a residence in the 1000 block of West Park Avenue regarding a report of an assault. Officers say they contacted a man who reported being physically assaulted by 39-year-old Kipp Lawson of Norfolk.

Officers say Lawson repeatedly knocked on the door throughout the morning until the owner opened the door and told Lawson he was not welcome. Lawson forced his way inside the residence, shoving the victim to the floor before leaving the property. Lawson left the residence prior to officers' arrival.

Officers found Lawson walking near the intersection of South 8th Street. Officers say Lawson, after ignoring multiple commands, reached into a bag and pulled out a canister of aerosol. In an attempt to subdue Lawson, officers deployed a TASER after Lawson started spraying what was in his can, which had little effect on either party.

After continuing to resist officers, a second deployment was used, and additional officers assisted in gaining control and placing Lawson under arrest. The aerosol was later identified as a can of cooking spray.

Officers say they found a loaded .22 caliber revolver in Lawson’s bag. Lawson did not disclose he was in possession of a concealed firearm during the encounter.

Lawson was medically cleared at the scene by Norfolk Fire & Rescue and transported to the Norfolk City Jail. He was booked on the following charges.

• Assault in the Third Degree (Class I Misdemeanor)

• Criminal Trespass – 2nd Degree (Class II Misdemeanor) 

• Obstructing a Peace Officer (Class I Misdemeanor) 

• Resisting Arrest (Class I Misdemeanor) Service-Honor-Commitment 

• Second Degree Assault on a Police Officer (Class II Felony) 

• Carrying a Concealed Handgun (State Statute 28-1202.04) 

• Possession of a Firearm During Commission of a Dangerous Misdemeanor
