BLOOMFIELD, Neb.— In 2014 when Julie and Eric Ketelsen were asked to do a maze for a local Halloween event, they never saw it becoming what it is today.

“I think we brought in ten semi loads this year,” Julie Ketelsen said.

The maze started with 80 bales of hay to now there is over 400. The event gets over 700 visitors, being free from the day it started.

But it’s not just the maze, there’s also a corn pit, pumpkin painting, a hay ride bringing guests to look at Halloween decorations in town and free food.

“We do a burger and hotdog feed with some chips,” Ketelsen said. “Farmers and Merchants State Bank here in Bloomfield help out a lot. This year Foxhoven Angus helped with the hamburgers.”

The spooky event has around 30 sponsors to make it happen, the Ketelsens being one of them, providing the hay for the event.

But nothing is taken for granted with this dedicated family, knowing how special it is, especially for the kids.

“I think it’s good for them to see us giving what we can back. I mean we have so many helpers do this so other than our physically work of being here and doing it, we get a lot of help,” Ketelsen said.

The event is on Saturday at 4 P.M. and the first two hours are done with the lights on so kids can have a fun and less scary time. After 8 P.M. the lights go out.

The maze is long with many dead ends and will have volunteers jumping out to scare guests.

It is held at the Knox County Fairgrounds.
