NORFOLK, Neb.- As temperatures drop, more shots are going up from behind the arc. The Norfolk High School boys basketball team is starting the new season with new head coach Ben Ries.

Ries is no stranger to the Panthers, previously holding the head coaching job for both boys and girls basketball teams. He even held the role as the schools Athletic Director.

The team went 3-20 last year. Ries says that to get big wins, the Panthers need to do the little things right.

“Take care of the basketball, defend as a team, knock down free throws,” Ries said. “So I just think overall I want to see how far this team can come in two or three months.”

The team has many multi-sport athletes expected to make an impact, including five football players.

Parker Rabbas and Gavin Jarecki traded in their pads for Sabrina 2’s sneakers.

With a new coach and strong team chemistry, the Panthers like their chances this season.

“I’ve known the senior group, especially, since probably first grade. Been around them for a long time, always play together, and I think that’s the best thing about this team, really,” Jarecki said.

“I’m just looking forward to a fresh start,” Rabbas said. “Last year, didn’t have the best year, but we bring a lot of guys back. Mostly the same team, lost one senior, so I’m just excited to get out there, play hard. We got a lot more confidence this year with a new system and a new coach, so we’ll just see what we can do.”

The Panthers start their season on the road against the North Platte Bulldogs on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
