PLAINVIEW, Neb. — The Plainview Board of Education has approved a proposal to seek voter approval for a bond exceeding $32 million in the upcoming May elections. The decision, made during special school bond meetings on Feb. 2 and 9, passed with a 4-2 vote.
Superintendent Dr. Darron Arlt addressed public concerns, stating that the board and committee carefully considered feedback before dividing the bond into two distinct options for voters.
"The first option, for $26.5 million, includes demolition, new classroom construction, and upgraded wrestling facilities in our century-old building, among other improvements," Arlt explained. "It aims to consolidate our facilities under one roof, as we currently operate with three separate buildings: an elementary school, a high school, and an agricultural/welding shop."
The second option, totaling $5.9 million, focuses on constructing a full-size gymnasium and two new female-rated storm shelters that will double as locker rooms.
Arlt emphasized a crucial aspect for voters: "A split vote is permissible, and voters can approve proposition 1 but not proposition 2. Voters can split their vote to yes on 1 and no on 2, but not no on 1 and yes on 2."
If approved on May 12, the $32,535,000 bond, with a maximum term of 25 years and an interest rate of 4.625%, could result in a total repayment of $54,945,859.05, including interest.
"We understand this is a significant request," Arlt acknowledged. "We view it as a 50-year solution, ensuring we won't need to seek further funding in 25 years. It's our committee's and school board's responsibility to ensure our voters are fully informed before they head to the polls in May."
