Norfolk, Neb. — After downtown revitalization efforts, the completion of multiple housing projects, and the addition of new city attractions, Economic Development Director for the City of Norfolk Candice Alder is seeing the fruits of her labor.

“I want to congratulate you. I have a plaque to present, recognizing you as an Economic Development Certified Community for five more years,” said Sheryl Hiatt.

The Nebraska Department of Economic Development last awarded Norfolk the designation in 2020. The certification recognizes communities that proactively take steps to expand economic opportunity.

Alder has been with the city since 2013 and has served as director since 2022. Since 2022, she says 700 new housing units have been built, an accomplishment she says will stay with her forever.

“Playing a part in those types of activities has been an incredible blessing, and it’s great to be able to look at it and see the fruits of your work,” said Alder.

The Nebraska Department of Economic Development says about $600 million in private-sector investment has gone into community development in the last five years.

Norfolk mayor Shane Clausen says that without the work Alder has done, Norfolk would still be stuck 30 years in the past.

“I remember the ’90s and early 2000s, and there wasn’t much downtown. It’s changed drastically, and it’s something you can be as a citizen to be extremely proud of the entrepreneurs who have stepped forward,” said Clausen.

Alder is stepping down from her position to take a new role with Precision IT. She says Norfolk is in good hands moving forward and offered a word of advice for her successor.

“Relationships matter. Really looking at and understanding all the assets and partners you have who are willing to come alongside you in the hard work of economic development is so critical to the overall process,” said Alder.

Clausen says Norfolk will continue to build on the work that Alder has put in place.
