WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate passed H.R. 5142 Wednesday night, which would posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to the 13 U.S. military servicemembers who were killed in Afghanistan on August 26, including Cpl. Daegan Page of Omaha.

All three of Nebraska's members of the House co-sponsored the legislation that was introduced by Rep. Lisa McCalin (R-MI). They were among 326 official co-sponsors.

“These brave men and women gave the ultimate sacrifice to our country and will never be forgotten,” Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) said in a press release Thursday. “I know a medal cannot replace Cpl. Daegan Page, but I hope it brings his family and friends some closure and reassurance in knowing how grateful our nation is.”

The legislation will also award the Congressional Gold Medal to Staff Sgt. Darin Taylor Hoover, Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo, Sgt. Nicole Gee, Cpl. Hunter Lopez, Cpl. Humberto Sanchez, Cpl. David Lee Espinoza, Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz, Lance Cpl. Rylee McCollum, Lance Cpl. Dylan Merola, Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui, Hospitalman Maxton Soviak and Staff Sgt. Ryan Knauss.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill in October. It now heads to President Joe Biden’s desk.
