NORFOLK, Neb. -- The holiday for stuffing our bellies as much as possible is arriving next week; but for many, stuffing them even adequately is not possible. That's why Salvation Army is stepping up.
"I have the privilege of seeing everyone come together to help others," Major Kelli Trejo said
The Salvation Army is packing meals for 161 households with volunteers from MP Global.
"It has been hard this year, we needed to work with a grocery store to secure our meat," Trejo explained. While their food bank supplied meats last year, Trejo said it was nerve-wracking to find the staple meals this year given supply shortages. "We've told the households that they'd be able to receive the meat and so we needed to make sure we had what they were needing," Trejo said.
While the food was in short stock, volunteers were not. Social Worker Alexis Thieman, said she was eager to help, knowing the recipients are all under the poverty line.
"We understand a lot of these families do not have enough money to get food for their household so they are in major need of help today," Thieman said.
Volunteers will deliver the goods Friday.
