MADISON, Neb. -- Authorities have arrested a suspect after he reportedly broke into an elderly man's home and struck him with a sword.

According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, an elderly man was outside his home in the 800 block of S. Nebraska Street in Madison when a younger man carrying a sword approached him at approximately 7:45 a.m.

The suspect reportedly followed the elderly man to his garage and broke into the house.

According to Madison County Sheriff Todd Volk, the suspect then hit the resident in the back with the sword.

The victim was able to reach a ball hammer and hit the suspect in the head with it, Volk said.

The suspect then reportedly fled on foot, while the resident the victim secured his home.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., a suspect was located and taken into custody.

As part of the investigation, sheriff’s deputies and other assisting law enforcement tracked footprints in the snow to near a residence, Volk said.

According to Volk, further investigation led to a suspect in a home who was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Ivan Saldana of Madison.

Assisting the Madison Sheriffs and Police Departments were the Norfolk Police Division, Nebraska State Patrol and Norfolk Dispatch.
