NORFOLK, Neb. -- The City of Norfolk is accepting applications for the Ward 3 seat that is now open. 

The City of Norfolk said that Councilman Gary Jackson, who was the City Council seat for Ward 3, had his resignation approved on Tuesday, Jan. 17. 

Jackson said that the reasons for his resignation were health related. 

"It has been a great honor and pleasure to serve with the city staff, Mayor Moenning, and the current council," Jackson said in a letter. "It has been a privileged six years upon being elected by the constituents of Ward 3. I hope the citizens of Norfolk can see what a great city staff, mayor and Council that they have in place."

Mayor Josh Moenning said that it has been a pleasure serving with Jackson. 

"He was a hardworking, dedicated public servant who always had the best interest of the community at heart," Moenning said. "We will miss him and we wish him well."

The City said that those interested in applying for the seat must be a resident of Ward 3, which is the southwest quadrant of Norfolk.

Applicants must also submit a written statement with intention and a personal resume to the City Administrator's office no later than 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26. 

After the application deadline, the Mayor and City Council are able to then start interviewing applicants. 

The City said there will be a special City Council meeting set for Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. in the council chambers to fill the Ward 3 vacancy. 

The person chosen to fill the vacancy will remain in seat until the term expires in Dec. 2024.
