NPS seeking bids for middle school renovation

NORFOLK, Neb. -- Norfolk Public Schools will be seeking construction bids to provide renovations to its middle school.
After being a point of contention last month, due to a proposed tax increase, NPS will be pursuing construction bids for the project.
The issue of renovations was brought up last month but had been rejected.
However, after reworking the budget, NPS said they have the funds for the project, although they do have limits on their budget.
The project would address safety concerns at one of the school's entrances and provide more space for classes and students.
One teacher supported the motion, arguing it was important the changes be made.
"Renovating the middle school and updating our building to include a safe and secure entrance is necessary to the safety of our students and staff and is necessary to the peace of mind of our community," Amber Peterson said. "While you have a duty to make sure our taxpayer money is spent responsibly, you also have a duty to those same taxpayers to ensure that their children are physically safe in their school buildings."
No one spoke in opposition to the motion on Monday night.
The board of education voted unanimously to approve the measure to put the project out for bids.
The board will then take a look at price estimates from contractors and make a decision to approve or reject the project at a later meeting.
