Two injured, driver cited after crash
STANTON, Neb. -- Authorities in northeast Nebraska responded to a two injury accident Sunday morning.
The Stanton County Sheriff's Office said that around 7:27 a.m., they responded to and investigating an injury accident about four miles south of Stanton on Highway 57.
The single-vehicle accident happened when a vehicle, driven by 27-year-old Alejandro Reyes of Stanton, was heading north crossed the center line through the southbound lane and hit a bridge guardrail head-on.
The Sheriff's Office said the impact destroyed the vehicle and caused major damage to the bridge railing.
A 30-year-old Stanton man was a passenger in the vehicle and was trapped in the wreckage. SCSO said that he was extricated using the "Jaws of Life."
The man was taken to a local hospital by ambulance for treatment of his injuries.
Reyes was taken to a local hospital following his arrest.
Reyes was arrested for a second-offense DWI, careless driving and an open alcoholic liquor container.
Law enforcement said the highway was closed for about two hours because the vehicle debris was spread over an approximately 30-yard area of the bridge/road.
The 30-year-old man was cited for an open alcoholic liquor container.
SCSO said that Stanton County Fire and Rescue along with Pilger Fire and Rescue, and Leigh Fire and Rescue responded to the scene. Stanton County Emergency Management assisted with the scene investigation.
Nebraska Department of Transportation were still at the scene at 11 a.m. working on the damaged bridge.
