GORDON, Neb. - Just months into his tenure, Gordon’s City Manager is out of a job.

In a 3-2 vote Thursday night, the Gordon City Council moved to terminate John Reed’s contract after an executive session. No public explanation was given for the decision.

Reed began his role on Sept. 9, succeeding Glen Spaugh, who retired after serving as city manager since February 2019. Along with managing city operations, Reed also held the titles of city treasurer and airport manager.

Shortly after stepping into the position, Reed spoke with News Channel Nebraska about his vision for Gordon, emphasizing economic and workforce development as key priorities.

“The opportunities are there. The facilities are there. The infrastructure is there. We could really make a change in the next ten years,” said Reed during the NCN interview.

With Reed’s sudden departure, the city will now determine its next steps in filling the leadership role. The city council is planning a special meeting Feb. 6 to appoint an interim city manager.
