NORFOLK, Neb.— Johnny Carson is turning 100-years-old and his hometown is throwing him a birthday party.

Johnny, for obvious reasons, can’t make it but that won’t stop the festivities the Elkhorn Valley Museum has in store.

October 23 is Carson’s 100th birthday, and the museum is hosting Johnnys Jazzy Birthday Party filled with cake, a bar, and jazz music.

“I know the combo has been working on the theme song for The Tonight Show, and I’m sure we’ll hear a jazzy version of happy birthday as well. So we thought that was a great way to kick it off,” Elkhorn Valley Museum Executive Director Libby McKay said.

Johnny moved to Norfolk when he was only eight years old. He later went to the University of Nebraska- Lincoln and got a degree in journalism, before moving out to make it big in Hollywood where most know him from.

The museum and the community in Norfolk didn’t forget where Johnny came from though, honoring him all weekend long.

“What we really wanted to do was sort of take an opportunity to celebrate all the different aspects of The Tonight Show that were consistent pieces for Johnny during his time,” McKay said. “And also some of the passions that Johnny had, and also still honor his Norfolk roots right? His Nebraska roots.”

Separate from the main Carson exhibit the museum has items of Johnny’s on display for the next month. Like his drum set that he played at home and on air.

There is also art work and some of his personal items on display.

“His makeup case that still has various elements in it, his brushes and makeup and deodorant. All kinds of things,” McKay said. “And along with that we also received plastic casts of Johnny Carson’s nose. So they would have cast that for different prosthetics he would have used when he was transforming into his different well known characters.”

Johnny played many different characters on his show, such as a teenaged girl.

The museum will end the weekend of fun on Sunday with a screening of “Johnny Goes Home,” a movie about Johnny coming back to Norfolk in 1981.

The museum will be open during the events for guests to see.
