NEBRASKA CITY -  Nebraska City Fire and Rescue responded to a locomotive fire at 5 a.m. today at 15th and Industrial Road.

The Union Pacific called in the fire and firefighters reported smoke and flames upon arrival. Extinguishing the fire was complicated by electrical current from locomotive to locomotive, including the burning engine. The scene was cleared in about 90 minutes.

A fire department report estimates damage at $1.5 million. Train locomotives are valued in the range of $3 million.

Firefighters also responded Sunday to the high rise at 200 N. Third Street on a report of a car fire.
