SIDNEY – The Cheyenne County community packed the Sidney Elks Lodge in support of a Potter resident who suffered a hemorrhagic stroke and is in recovery.

A benefit dinner, silent and live auctions were held at the Elks Lodge in support of the Mark Dvorak family.

As supporters were taking part in the dinner and auction, Dvorak’s daughter Sarah Olsen and her friend Julie Lund talked about the night.

“We’re here for Mark Dvorak’s dinner and auction benefit. We’re here raising funds for his medical costs. He had a hemorrhagic stroke on December 22, and he is still in recovery at the hospital at Craig in Denver, Colo. We’re out here just trying to raise funds and help with his medical funds,” Olsen said.

Olsen said Saturday was day-69 post-stroke.

“We’ve had a long journey so far and a long road ahead of us. We were life-flighted to Anchutz in Colorado, so he was in Anchutz for a couple weeks, just about three weeks, and then ICU, coma and all the stuff for a little while and then we transferred him over to the Craig Hospital mid-January, and that is where his is at today,” she said Saturday.

Suddenly being caretake for a parent is stressing. The duties are taken by Dvorak’s children.

“It’s been a lot on all of us. My dad is not married so a lot of it has fallen on us kids. My brother is in the State Patrol Academy right now, so he’s really focused on being there in Grand Island and can’t really get away very often. So, a lot of it has been on my brother John and I, and I’m there usually fulltime. And then, taking breaks, John’s taking over and so is his wife Shelby,” she said.

She said although it is a lot, they are thankful he is alive and they can spend time with him.

A gofundme has been established; as of Sunday, $11,170 has been committed of a $35,000 goal. The gofundme link is https://gofund.me/619cdcd14
