OMAHA, Neb. -- An Iowa man was sentenced in federal court in Omaha on Tuesday for using multiple Social Security numbers, including his child's, to open up an account.
33-year-old Andrew D. Finn, of Council Bluffs, was sentenced to imprisonment for time served. Finn will now begin a 3-year term of supervised release.
In December of 2018, Finn submitted an online application to Cobalt Federal Credit Union to open an account. Finn's application was denied based upon his prior history with the credit union.
In early January 2019, Finn again tried to open an account but used another person’s Social Security number. Cobalt FCU also denied this application. Later in the month of January 2019, Finn submitted four online applications to open accounts at Cobalt FCU using his child’s Social Security number. These applications were approved because they passed the bank’s application screening process.
On February 2, 2019, Finn visited a Cobalt FCU branch where a credit union employee questioned him about his use of two Social Security numbers. Finn insisted that the stolen Social Security number belonged to him and the other Social Security number – his true Social Security number – did not.
This case was investigated by the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General.
