LYONS, Neb. -- After weeks of waiting, and an apparent fix, residents in Lyons are still dealing with brown water.

New valves were installed more than a week ago, but freezing temperatures froze the new valves, according to Lyons Utilities Supervisor Terry Ueding.

The city has spent Tuesday and Wednesday wrapping the temporary filter system to warm the valves. The city says it hopes residents will have clean water by Christmas.

Area schools have been notified that the water is not safe to drink, but the elementary school in town reports that the water is coming out clear and that they are allowing students to drink it.

The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy has advised residents to not drink the water or wash clothes, though the water can be used for non-cooking chores.
