Sheriff Mike Unger files for re-election, seeking 9th term in Stanton County

STANTON, Neb. -- A sheriff in northeast Nebraska is seeking re-election.
Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger said Thursday that he has filed paperwork seeking his re-election for a ninth term as Stanton County Sheriff.
Unger made the announcement via a press release on the Stanton County Sheriff's Office website.
Unger recently spoke to News Channel Nebraska about a rise in arrests of people on the sex offender registry.
"It is a criminal offense in Nebraska for a sex offender registrant not to comply with the rules, Sheriff Unger said. "And the rules are quite stringent and I'll be honest with you, it is tough for some of the persons on the registry to maintain that, but it is their obligation."
"A lot of times people that don't follow up with their required three months reporting is a violation. That is actually a felony if they don't report. We usually give them some leeway, a few extra days," said Sheriff Unger. "But if they don't, then we actually go out and make contact and we will make an arrest and book them for that violation. Then, we will forward that violation to the county attorney who may or may not prosecute them."
Unger has has more than 40 years of law enforcement experience and has served in Stanton County since 1986. He is also a decorated U.S. Army veteran and currently serves as an EMT with Pilger Fire and Rescue.
