NORFOLK, Neb.-- Springtime around Nebraska means golf courses are opening back up for the season.

At the Norfolk Country Club, high school students around northeast Nebraska were on the greens enjoying a great day to golf on Thursday.

“Today [on Thursday], we have Lutheran High Northeast’s invite. We’ve got 12 teams throughout northeast Nebraska. They had 62 players and they’ll have a great day to play golf,” said Jeff Kuhn, who is the General Manager at the club.

With good weather expected ahead, the country club is enjoying a smooth transition into the spring golf season. But for other golf courses around the state, Kuhn said it’s been a struggle.

“I know a lot of places are struggling right now due to the climate that we had over the winter, the dry season we’ve had this spring, and the wind,” added Kuhn. “We feel bad for those places because golf is at an all-time high right now,” he said.

With other places struggling, the club in Norfolk is not. Kuhn explained why that is.

“We put in a brand-new irrigation system last year,” he said. “It’s definitely provided us with the adequate watering system to put down enough water going into the winter season and provide enough water as we hit spring here,” Kuhn added.

Even with the course being in great shape, there were some things the club's maintenance team did to improve it.

“We went through and trimmed up 62 trees. We took down 20 other trees,” said Kuhn. “We’ve still got a long way to go,” he added. “We’re going to reset some areas that were damaged and just make sure we provide that true country club experience,” Kuhn said.

The club has a big season ahead with them hosting state golf near the end of May.
