Macy evacuated due to nearby Burt County fire

A northeast Nebraska town was evacuated Saturday as officials responded to a large grass fire nearby.

MACY, Neb. -- A northeast Nebraska town was evacuated Saturday as officials responded to a large grass fire nearby.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, the town of Macy in Thurston County was being evacuated as a fire raged in nearby Burt County.

Nebraska 511 also alerted residents to a highway closure caused by the fire. Highway 51 near Highway 77 was also closed.

According to authorities, all Washington County fire departments responded to the fire, asking for backup from Bennington, Irvington and Ponca Hills to cover their stations.

The Nebraska State Patrol is also encouraging all landowners in the affected areas to activate their irrigation systems, which will help firefighters battle the blaze.
