NORFOLK, Neb. -- It took 81 firefighters and 30 rigs approximately 90 minutes to put out a fire in cornfield in northeast Nebraska Saturday night.

Crews were called to the scene south of Norfolk at 5:45 p.m., according to Norfolk Fire Capt. Lannce Grothe.

Grothe said firefighters encountered heavy smoke and moderate flames upon arrival.

The Norfolk Fire Division was assisted by the Madison County Sheriff's Office, Madison Fire, Battle Creek Fire, Hoskins/Woodland Park Fire and Rescue, and Stanton Fire.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Grothe offered a reminder that dry conditions are creating heightened fire conditions and that people should not discard cigarettes out of vehicles or park on edges in tall grass.
