School officials held a special naming rights ceremony at the South Sioux City Community School District on Thursday afternoon.

The ceremony included check presentations for new updates within the Cardinal Activities Complex at the school.

Construction for phase one of the project is set to begin during the second week of May, according to officials.

Some of the renovations around the complex during phase one include artificial turf, an eight-lane running track, new LED lighting, and new bleachers for the fans.

Superintendent Todd Strom said it’s time for updated facilities within the district.

“It’s due time for a new athletic complex here at South Sioux City and the whole community is just excited, “ Strom said.

The district is in the middle of a capital campaign to enhance other aspects of the complex.

Phase two of the project depends on the generosity of people who wish to donate.

“There is an opportunity for individuals to come forward and contact Lance Swanson, our director of the foundation, and leave a legacy here in South Sioux City, “ added Strom.

Possible phase two features will include press box renovations, a new interactive scoreboard, concession stand, plaza area, an improved entrance, and storage facility.

Donors who wish to contribute to the donor recognition levels list will be recognized on the Cardinal Wall of Honor.

Strom also said he expects the project to be completed by next spring.
