ATLANTA, Ga. -- A team of Northeast Community College students is bringing a national championship back to Nebraska.

Northeast Community College claimed the gold medal in Broadcast News Production at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Competition in Atlanta last week.

The team consisted of Conner Luebbe (Seward), Ervin Dohmen (Norfolk), Alexander Kasten (Brandon, S.D.) and Zane Thompson (Anselmo). Northeast Community College media arts instructor Brian Anderson served as the team's advisor.

In the competition, four-member teams have two hours to write and produce a news rundown before the assigned contest time.

Two students serve as the news anchor team, one student serves as the team’s director/technical director, and one student is the floor director. Competing teams produce and complete a three-minute newscast as if it were live. Teams are evaluated on their broadcast writing ability, voice quality, diction, timing and pacing and performance techniques.

Northeast's gold medal-winning squad bested second-place Tulsa Technology Center-Riverside and bronze medalist Forsyth Tech Community College.

"I'm super proud of this group," Anderson said in a social media post. "They’ve trained hard for this moment and [were] ready to take on the task."

It is the second straight year Northeast has won the national title in the event.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Luebbe is a current employee of Flood Communications and News Channel Nebraska.
