Big Bang Boom gearing up for its 46th year

NORFOLK, Neb.-- A northeast Nebraska 4th of July celebration is back for its 46th year.
Big Bang Boom will return on Saturday and the main organizers of the event are working hard to make sure everything gets done on time. Don Wisnieski, the president of Big Bang Boom, told NCN that the setup is about 80 to 85% done ahead of Saturday and mentioned why BoomFest has been critical to the Norfolk community for all these years.
“Big Bang Boom here in Norfolk has been such a great tradition,” Wisnieski said. “This is our 46th anniversary. It started out in 1976 to commemorate the Bicentennial of the United States. This is celebrating our nation's birthday.”
“The size of Norfolk right now to have a world-class fireworks show is phenomenal,” added Wisnieski.
The setup for BoomFest involves putting in long hours in the summer heat but Wisnieski said he and his staff are honored to organize the event because of previous sacrifices.
“We couldn’t be more proud to do what we do because of a lot of people years ago to make sure that this freedom is here,” Wisnieski said. “The participation we get from the community and from our entire committee is second to none.”
With a great turnout for last year’s show despite Covid-19 numbers being much more prevalent, organizers said they are expecting even more people this year.
“We’re expecting a bigger crowd and we’re hoping for the best,” Wisnieski said. “The weather looks very good so it should be bringing people out.”
The weekend will kick off Friday night with a Wing Fest competition coordinated by the Stanton Ribfest organizers. Norfolk Area Rod and Custom is also sponsoring a Car Show N Shine. The fireworks show will start around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday night.
