BATTLE CREEK, Neb. -- A northeast Nebraska utility will celebrating the growth of its coverage area next week.

On Tuesday, Elkhorn Rural Public Power District will be marking the installation of 10,000 meters in its territory.

The power district first began in 1940, when the first 168 services were energized over 116 miles of distribution line. Eighty-two years later, there are now over 10,000 services for 5,028 customers over 2,874 miles of line.

There will be an open house on Tuesday from 12-4 p.m. at the headquarters building in Battle Creek to celebrate the utility's most recent growth. There will be a short program at 1:00 p.m. to commemorate it with the reading of a resolution from the board of directors and a letter of congratulations from Gov. Pete Ricketts.
