NPD warns of scammers imitating officers

NORFOLK, Neb. -- The Norfolk Police Division is reporting a scam in which callers are reportedly using the NPD phone number and officer names to get money from victims.
According to a press release issued by Norfolk PD, multiple citizens have reported receiving targeted calls that attempted to scam them out of money.
Norfolk Police Capt. Chad Reiman said the scammers tell the call recipient that there is a warrant or a pending warrant for their arrest, and that they will be detained if they do not money.
Reiman said the number showing up on the caller ID is the real Norfolk Police Division phone number. He said the alleged scammers also identify themselves using the names of actual Norfolk Police officers. He said both tactics convince potential victims that the request is legitimate.
The alleged scammers then send a text with different business names where the call recipient needs to go to send money, Reiman said. He also said the alleged perpetrators also text a bar code that can be scanned to send money.
Reiman said the Norfolk Police Division never calls and asks anyone to send money for a warrant. He advised anyone who receives a call like this to not send money.
