Kowalczyk, Powders collect NSIC Football Player of the Week honors
Two Wayne State College football plays were announced as players of the week on Monday morning.
WAYNE, Neb. -- Two Wayne State College football plays were announced as players of the week on Monday morning.
Wayne State College sophomore linebacker Alex Kowalczyk and senior placekicker/punter Alex Powders were announced as NSIC Defense and Special Teams Players of the Week.
They were announced respectively following their play in Saturday’s 41-33 homecoming shootout victory over Minnesota State.
It’s the second time this season (September 12 vs. Northern State) and third time overall that Kowalczyk has been named Defensive Player of the Week while Powders earns Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in his career (9/27/21 vs. #11 Minnesota Duluth).
Kowalczyk, a 5-11 210 pounder from Sioux Falls, S.D. (O’Gorman HS), recorded a career-high 18 tackles and a forced fumble that led to a fumble return touchdown for the ‘Cats in Saturday’s win over the Mavericks. He was credited with eight solo and 10 assisted tackles in the win.
Last season, Kowalczyk also garnered NSIC Defensive Player of the Week honors against Minnesota State when he had 13 tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack in a 35-24 come-from-behind win at #11 MSU.
For the season, Kowalczyk leads WSC with 56 total tackles and ranks third in the NSIC with 9.3 tackles per game.
Powders, a 5-10 180 pounder from Council Bluffs, Iowa (Iowa Western CC/Thomas Jefferson HS), made all five PAT kicks and was 2 for 2 on field goals in Saturday’s big win over Minnesota State.
He booted field goals of 24 and 26 yards, averaged 40.5 yards on two punts and had four touchbacks on seven kickoffs averaging 60.4 yards per kickoff.
For the season, Powders is 24-25 on PAT kicks and 4-5 on field goals.
Wayne State, 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in the NSIC South, visits 5-1, 1-1 Augustana in Sioux Falls at 1 p.m.
