WAYNE, Neb. -- A college in northeast Nebraska is home to one of Nebraska's most well-known ghost stories.

Neihardt Hall on the campus of Wayne State College is home to the urban legend of Cora the Ghost.

The legend goes that a student named Cora died in the basement storage closet of Neihardt Hall and now her ghost haunts the dorm hall.

But I wanted to know, did it really happen?

I spoke with Marcus Schlichter, the WSC archivist, who said he could not find any records of a girl named Cora that died in Neihardt.

"I found that there was only one student who died in Neihardt, that was in 1976, and she died of natural causes," Schlichter said. "There have only been a handful of students named Cora that I could find and none of them fit the bill either. They all lived into their 70s and 80s."

Schlichter believes that the story surrounding Cora is about Cora Hintz, a schoolteacher who was murdered in 1917.

Cora's sister attended Wayne State College and Schlichter believes Hintz's story could have been told and embellished throughout the next 100 years.

"There's only one Cora that remotely might fill the bill and that was Cora Hintz who murdered up in Coleridge in 1917. Perhaps, her story made its way back," Schlichter said. "She had a sister who was here at Wayne State at the time and some of the students in her class, a rural school with 37 students in her class, it's not unreasonable that one of the students eventually came to Wayne and told the story of Cora."

Neihardt residents have heard voices and footsteps in the hall when no one is around.

Supposedly one group of roommates had a door open and slam in their room while talking about Cora.

"A story I heard was a visitor there had some pictures of her boyfriend on the dresser and the next morning they were all turned face down because Cora supposedly Cora doesn't like men," Schlichter said. "In the middle of the night, they hear the keyboard on their computer like somebody is typing but nobody is there obviously. Or scratching on the bed posts, things like that."

Two different paranormal groups have investigated Neihardt Hall and have said that there was a presence of sadness and that the spirit was afraid to pass on to the other side.

Groups have also filmed orbs during investigations.

Regardless of whether it's Cora or not roaming the halls of Neihardt, only one question remains.

What is haunting Neihardt Hall?

Residents may just have to find out all on their own.
