PILGER, Neb. -- The cold temperatures across the state gave one northeast Nebraska woman and her son a chance to do a bit of a science experiment Thursday.

The wind chills hitting -50 degrees in northeast Nebraska, Kelsey Aude and her son were able to suspend a fork in wet noodles, creating some unique pictures.

Cold weather and vicious wind chills gripped Nebraska just before the holidays.

Those cold temperatures are expected to hand around through the Christmas weekend, with things warming up a bit next week.

Aude said that her and her son wanted to see how long it would take from something to freeze in the sub-temperatures.

"We have been learning about the safety of winter temperatures and frostbite, so I cooked some noodles up and we put them on a plate to take outside when it was -45 degree wind chill," Aude said. "We waited to see how long it would take to freeze something that was hot."

She said it took a little less than five minutes for the noodles to freeze, allowing her to remove her hand and the noodles and fork to remain suspended.

"We also did the boiling hot water into the air as well, and watched it turn to vapors," Aude said.
