STANTON, Neb. -- The Stanton County Sheriff's Office remained busy during the Wednesday snow storm.

Sheriff Mike Unger said multiple vehicles were towed during the storm, and he also said a person was arrested for DWI following an accident.

Unger said that around 1 a.m. on Thursday, they responded to, and investigated, a one-vehicle crash that happened near 833rd Road and 559th Ave. This was just northeast of Madison and the Sheriff's Office said that it was during the height of the snow storm.

SCSO said the driver, 28-year-old Owen Pavelk of Madison, was not injured, but Unger claimed that his office believed he was intoxicated.

Pavelk reportedly had a BAC of more than double the legal limit when he was tested at the Sheriff's Office, according to Unger's account.

He was arrested for a second-offense DWI, careless driving, and an open container alcohol violation.

Unger said that Pavelk was released after posting cash bond.

SCSO said there was another incident where a vehicle was found stranded on the roadway and abandoned until daylight. Officials said that the driver was cited for having an open container of alcoholic liquor after testing under the legal limit.

Unger said that throughout the day on Wednesday and into Thursday morning they, along with Stanton County Emergency Management, responded to numerous calls of vehicles stuck in the snow or off the roadway and unable to be removed at the time.

Snow emergencies were declared in Stanton and Woodland Park, and the Sheriff's Office said those helped with getting vehicles off the streets before the main snowfall.

However, it was reported that there were four vehicles towed in Stanton and six were towed in Woodland Park, when the vehicles were not removed from the streets as directed.

SCSO said they would like to remind everyone to take extra time and slow down in these wintery conditions, and to not drink and drive.
