WAYNE, Neb. – As the Wayne State baseball team aims for its first winning record in three seasons, the Wildcats were dealt an added layer of adversity over the weekend.

Following a weekend series at Upper Iowa, the Wildcats’ bus was t-boned by a truck outside of Sioux City, according to a Twitter post released by the WSC baseball team.

Wayne State baseball coach Alex Koch credited first responders from Dakota City, South Sioux City and Jackson, while also noting that no one from the team was significantly injured.

Via Twitter, Koch noted that the Jackson Express gas station provided hospitality for the team and fed them while they waited for a ride home.

The team was able to get back to campus after the Wayne Community School District sent a bus to drive them the rest of the way.

The Wildcats won the opening two games of the series against the Peacocks before dropping the series finale on Saturday.

Wayne State sits at 17-17 with 15 conference games remaining on the schedule.

The Wildcats are seeking their first winning campaign since the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season. Wayne State went 8-7 that season, a year after finishing 32-18.

Currently, the Wildcats sit at eighth place in the 15-team NSIC.

The Wildcats will play Winona State in a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday.
