NORFOLK, Neb. -- A northeast Nebraska junior high assistant principal was presented with an award from the Nebraska State Association of Secondary School Principals.

Norfolk Public Schools said that Norfolk Junior High's Assistant Principal Beau Viergutz was presented with the Assistant Principal of the Year Award for Region 3 of the NSASSP.

NPS said Region 3 principals selected Viergutz for the award. There are five regions in Nebraska, and 50 school districts are represented in the third.

Winning the award makes Viergutz eligible to earn the state ward that will be announced in December. The state winner will be chosen by a committee selecting between the five Nebraska region winners of this award.

“I am pleased to see Mr. Viergutz recognized by this award," said Dr. Jami Jo Thompson, NPS Superintendent. "He does a great job engaging students and ensuring that they are successful. He greets students in the halls with a positive message, and he checks in on them regularly to see how they are doing. Mr. Viergutz wants each student to know that they are important and that we care about them. He provides them with positive feedback and rewards for good behavior, and promotes a positive, student-centered culture at Norfolk Junior High School.”

Viergutz is a 14 year educational professional and the current Assistant Principal at Norfolk Jr. High School. He is a 2005 graduate of Norfolk High School and obtained his undergraduate degree for History and Secondary Education with a Coaching Endorsement from Dana College in 2009.

Viergutz started his teaching career at Grand Island Northwest and taught seventh and eighth grade Social Studies while coaching Varsity Football and Freshman Boys Basketball for four years. He then took over as the Head Boys Basketball coach at Cedar Bluffs High School and taught 6-8 grade Social Studies for two years.

According to the NPS press release, Viergutz wanted to move closer to his hometown and family and took over as the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Madison High School for two years while teaching reading and assisting with Title I students.

NPS said Viergutz was looking for a teaching spot in the Norfolk Public Schools district and finally got an opportunity when a teaching position in the Alternatives for Success program opened up. Viergutz spent one year in the program while coaching Varsity Football and Varsity Basketball.

Viergutz finished his Master’s Degree from Wayne State College in December 2017 when NPS added an Administrative position at the Jr. High. He was selected to be the Dean of Students/Activities Director at the Jr. High and remained there for three years. When the Assistant Principal spot opened up, he was picked for that role and has been in the position the last two years.

NPS said that Viergutz wants to thank all of his fellow administrators he has had the privilege of learning from during his short time serving as an administrator.

Finally, Viergutz is the proud father of two children, and he married to his wife Amanda (high school sweethearts) for 11 years.
