NORFOLK, Neb. -- A northeast Nebraska man was arrested after allegedly striking another man with a metal ashtray during an argument.

On Sunday at 7:34 p.m., Norfolk Police officers were called to the 300 block of North 9th Street in Norfolk. A man claimed that he had been in an argument with 20-year-old Conner Shafer, also of Norfolk.

Police noted that the reporting party had a laceration to his head. He said he and Shafer had been arguing over Shafer dumping cigarettes from an ashtray, which the reporting party said created a mess on the ground.

The argument reportedly escalated, leading each to shove the other.

According to NPD, after Shafer lost his balance, he came toward the other man and struck him with a metal ashtray.

Norfolk Police Capt. Michael Bauer said officers were able to view surveillance footage that showed the incident.

After watching the video, officers made contact with Shafer and arrested him for second-degree assault, Bauer said.

Shafer was housed in the Norfolk City Jail and later transferred to the Madison County Jail.
