NORFOLK, Neb. -- Three people were arrested near Norfolk after reports of gunshots.

The Stanton County Sheriff's Office said officers were sent to an area east of the Woodland Park elementary school around 2:13 a.m. on Saturday for a report of shots fired. Several 911 calls reported four to six gunshots and at least one man running from the area.

Officers said they saw a man and woman walking near the school and the man had a handgun sticking out of his pants pocket. The man and woman were reportedly detained at gunpoint and the gun was found to be a toy/prop pistol.

According to authorities, the 14-year-old boy who was detained was being put in a patrol unit because he was on probation but he ran off. A third person was reportedly there as well and most likely fired the shots that were reported.

Officials said the 13-year-old girl from Norfolk was on diversion and would not identify the other boy involved. They reportedly found the boy that had ran and took him into custody near his home. Another boy was at the home and would not cooperate or give his name.

Police said the 14-year-old shooter from Norfolk was identified and it turned out to be the one that had refused to cooperate when asked to identify himself. He was reportedly put under arrest but he physically began to resist the handcuffs and had to be physically subdued.

SCSO said they had not found the handgun that was used in the shooting at that time and the boy would not talk to authorities. 9mm ammunition was reportedly later found hidden in his crotch area during a search.

According to authorities, both boys were referred to probation officers for their probation violations and new charges and the probation office initially declined to detain either boy, however they did ultimately authorize the detention of both 14-year-olds at the Madison JDC. Both boys are on probation for several offenses including assault.

Officers said the girl was cited and released to her mother. The handgun has still not been foundat this time.
